How to Prepare for Your First Agency Test Shoot

3 October 2026 · 6 min read

A test shoot is where your portfolio begins. Arrive prepared and you will leave with images that start booking work.

What a test shoot is for

Once an agency takes you on, it arranges test shoots with photographers, stylists and makeup artists to build your book. These images show clients how you move and photograph. Many of the profiles in our model directory began with exactly this kind of shoot.

The days before

Drink plenty of water, sleep properly and avoid trying new skincare products or haircuts that could react badly. Keep nails clean and neutral. If your agency gives you a mood board, study it so you understand the story the team wants to tell.

What to pack

Nude and black seamless underwear, a plain white T-shirt, fitted black basics, heels or clean shoes, a hairbrush, moisturiser, water and a snack. Bring your phone charged so you can share your details and receive call times.

On set

Arrive at your call time, not after it. Be friendly with the whole team. Move slowly between poses so the photographer can catch each angle, and take direction calmly. Confidence grows with every frame.

Test shoots are also great practice for castings. Read what casting directors look for before your first audition.
