How to Spot Modelling Scams and Fake Agencies

18 October 2026 · 5 min read

Most aspiring models meet a fake scout at some point. These warning signs help you protect yourself.

Warning sign 1: Pressure to pay immediately

Be wary of anyone who demands money on the spot, or insists you buy an expensive photo package before they have even reviewed your digitals. A professional agency explains any costs clearly and in writing and gives you time to decide.

Warning sign 2: No model board or client work

Legitimate agencies publish the models they represent and the brands they work with. Check for a live model board and a portfolio of client work.

Warning sign 3: Private messages only

Scammers often use personal social media accounts, refuse to share an office address and ask to meet in private places. Real scouts are happy to connect you with the agency's official email and phone line.

Warning sign 4: No written contract

Never agree to representation without a contract that states the commission, the duration and how you can leave. Read it fully before signing.
